The SIS Primary School Curriculum incorporates a holistic type of education centered on major teaching and learning skills that help students enhance life-long learning skills that is high in priority as stated in the school’s vision and mission. These skills are: Life skills, Knowledge skills and Content-based Subject Disciplines. Primary pupils in SIS are provided with up-to-date, enriching and differentiated learning experiences and are given a variety of opportunities to develop skills that they need to equip them for Secondary education.
The SIS curriculum emphasizes progressive learning of content, concepts and contexts in all the disciplines. Textbooks, workbooks, supplementary, remedial and enrichment materials, teaching aids and resources, all provide the necessary tools to guide pupils through the foundation years (Primary 1 & 2; Primary 3 & 4) to the orientation years (Primary 5 & 6).
The acquisition of literacy is developed through the emphasis of the four language skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. These provide them mastery of basic literacy skills to enable them to read and respond to a variety of texts, speak fluently on a variety of subjects, develop ideas and write for a variety of purposes, identify the purpose of different text types, use reading strategies to create meaning, converse and write functional texts. They will be able to analyze and appreciate various types of literature.
In numeracy, pupils are taught to use a range of mathematical skills and processes to solve problems in everyday life. At a lower level, these include knowledge of number facts, performing arithmetic operations, problem solving and the learning of concepts, leading to skills at a higher level to build up a foundation for working with pre-algebra and higher Mathematics.
With a sound knowledge of Science they will be able to recognize relationships between variables and to manipulate them for experimental purposes. They will be able to interpret numerical data and to give reasonable explanations to back up their observations and decide on the accuracy of data obtained in an investigation and discuss environmental issues.
By the end of the six years of Primary education, all SIS pupils will have been provided with a holistic education that will enable them to learn independently, find solutions through a variety of problem-solving skills and reflect on their own thinking processes.
